Ensembles

The 7th Grade Choir is a performing ensemble open to all 7th grade students. Rehearsals occur on a daily basis, emphasizing the development of the changing voice, basic music theory, and proper singing techniques. A variety of music will be performed throughout the year. The group performs in two-three major concerts per year, is involved in workshops and clinics hosted at VHS, and may participate in a middle level music contest. All students are required to attend all scheduled choir activities during the year.

The 8th Grade Choir is a performing ensemble open to all 8th grade students. Rehearsals occur on a daily basis emphasizing the development of the voice and a continuation of the musical development started in 7th Grade Choir. The music performed will increase in difficulty and push the students to new levels of musical ability. The group performs in two-three major concerts per year, is involved in workshops and clinics hosted at VHS, and may participate in a middle level music contest. All students are required to attend all scheduled choir activities during the year.

Kantorei (intermediate men’s choir, grades 9-12) is a non-auditioned choir open to all men in grades 9-12.  The course will focus on the enjoyment of singing, exposure to the many styles of choral music, and the development of the skills necessary for an excellent choral performance.  Kantorei performs in the two-three major concerts each year, the MSHSL Large Group Contest, and workshops and clinics hosted at VHS.  The choir embarks on a major trip every four years.  This choir is a year long course; students must sign up for both semesters.

Bel Canto (intermediate women’s choir, grades 9-12) is a non-auditioned choir open to all women in grades 9-12; no audition needed.  The course will focus on the enjoyment of singing, exposure to the many styles of choral music, and the development of the skills necessary for an excellent choral performance.  Bel Canto performs in the two-three major concerts each year, the MSHSL Large Group Contest, and workshops and clinics hosted at VHS.  The choir embarks on a major trip every four years.  This choir is a year long course; students must sign up for both semesters.

A Cappella Choir (advanced mixed choir, grades 10-12) is open to female and male singers in grades 10-12.  Membership in this choir is obtained through audition only.  The A Cappella Choir is designed to fulfill the needs of those students who desire a strong background in choral singing. The choir performs all styles of choral literature from the renaissance through the contemporary periods, and a high level of commitment is expected.  Emphasis is placed on solo and ensemble singing. The choir performs in three-four major concerts throughout the year, fulfills community obligations, performs in the MSHSL music contests, participates in music festivals, and travels every two years.  This choir is a year long course; students must sign up for both semesters.
